I get asked all the time if it is a good investment to remodel so here are my thoughts. I will say this out of the gate, if your decision is predicated on return on investment down the road, you will never see the full amount spent. Below is a few numbers
YOUR HOME IS YOUR CASTLE and the real decision to remodel should come from your desire to make your home more comfortable for you. It’s all about your peace of mind and happiness. Yes, if you are thinking about selling soon, you should be prudent in the amount of money you spend, the projects you choose, and the color schemes but if you are going to be staying in your home for a while, go for it.
With that being said, I listed a home a year ago that was decorated for the individual. It was dark and probably didn’t appeal to most but the reason I am telling you this story is because at the end of the day, the home sold at a very comparable price and the individual had numerous years of happiness in her castle.
Lastly, I will point out that most home improvement projects that save energy are better investments because there are two revenue sources at play. An example is if you change your windows out and spend $10,000. When you sell your home you will reap roughly $7,500 of that initial investment back along with the energy savings each month. So if you save $50.00 a month it only would take 4 years to recoup your full investment back and you would have the benefit of storm protection, much quieter and all the other up to date benefits of new windows.
